Vincent the Golden Retriever

I'm going to be painting him in his favorite spot, lying on the hardwood floor in his house with his family.
Here's my initial sketch:

Since this is a large portrait (24" x 36") and Vincent has complex coloring in his coat, I decided to start with his face and experiment with layering the colors, before painting in the rest of the body.
I started with a rough underpainting of purple and orange, to map out his features. You can see the reference photo of his face taped up next to the painting on the canvas.

Next, I added in the dark areas of his eyes and nose, and started on the colors of his coat.

I added highlights of Zinc White to define the shine on his fur, and shadows of reddish brown around his ears and eyes. Here's my progress so far:

I still need to refine the colors of his coat a little bit to tone down a bit of the redness and build up more sheen. Next, I'll paint in the rest of his body.
